Ash Wednesday Taize' Service

Ash Wednesday Taize' Service

Taize’ worship was conceived in the Taize’ community of France, a monastic ecumenical brotherhood established by Brother Roger Schutz in 1940. The style of worship entails deep reflection and meditative prayer. Occasionally simple chants are sung, repeating the chants so that the music and words can be absorbed into the soul. In between the chants there are periods of silence, allowing the individuals and the community to consider what the chant means for each. Scripture may be read, but customarily there is no sermon or homily, allowing the participants to give the Spirit a personal interpretation. Taize’ worship is enhanced by candlelight, evoking the presence of the Light of God in the worship space.

There is a spiritual inclusiveness which seeks to overcome the barriers of denominational and doctrinal traditions, uniting Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant communities. Every year thousands of people, especially youth and young adults make a pilgrimage to the tiny village of Taize’. However, the style of Taize’ worship has spread to many nations of the earth.
